When choosing a nursing school below are some tips to consider before making a final decision. Do Your Homework:One of the most important tips is for you to do your homework when searching for a school. There are different types of nursing schools that offer different types of nursing programs. Some may be degree based while others may be certification based or diploma based. Plus each school may have different costs, different cultures, may require you to relocate, etc. The more information you have to help you make a decision the better. Understand Your OptionsFor example if you know for sure you want to become an RN but you want to do it as quickly as possible, then you may wish to attend a school that offers an associates degree in nursing that will allow you to earn your RN. Many RNs do not earn a bachelor’s degree (BSN), but instead earn an ASN (Associate of Science in Nursing). Then after working for awhile as a nurse they may later in their career decide to return to school in order to complete their BSN degree via an RN to BSN program. Save Money And TimeIf you know for sure you will never want to go into management and only want to practice as a nurse, then why spend the time or money earning a BSN degree? This is an area of debate, but the final decision is up to you. If you later change your mind you can always return to school for the completion of an accelerated nursing program. Think about this, you can take the NCLEX exam and become an RN (registered nurse) whether you earn an ASN degree or a BSN degree. The main difference is with an ASN degree you will not likely be able to go into management. But you can complete a two year nursing school program, save yourself a couple of years and thousands of dollars, and become an RN. The main thing you have to ask yourself is what your career goals are. If they including going into management or require you to hold a bachelors degree, then by all means consider the four year degree plan.
